Research shows that when healthcare facilities' staff and vendor employees are aware of infection problems and take specific steps to prevent them, rates can decrease by more than 70 percent, according to an article on the EHS Today website.

Eighty-nine percent of maintenance vendors do not know how their work can cause an infection, the article said.

All personnel working in a facility should risk management methods, including:

• Establishing a communications plan for monitoring adherence to guidelines

• Mapping high-traffic areas of the facility

• Minimize the number of entry areas
