Lincoln hospitals hold winter storm disaster training
Emergency scenario included a winter storm, a school bus accident and a power failure
By Healthcare Facilities Today
A recent mass-casualty disaster-readiness exercise at hospitals in Lincoln, Neb., involved a scenario that included a winter storm, a school bus accident and a power failure, according to an article on the Lincoln Journal Star website.
Across the city, several hundred people participated in the practice event, including staff and management at the three hospitals, as well as emergency management staff.
The exercise started with a real-life glitch, the article said. The real medics and four ambulances were called away for a real emergency, a fire in a mobile home. So the pretend victims had to be transported to the hospitals by a Madonna Rehabilitation bus and an emergency management van.
Feedback is the most important part of the exercise — figuring out what is needed moving forward, Robbie Dumond, Bryan Medical Center's trauma and emergency preparedness manager, said in the article.
