Pregnant women who seek care at the emergency department at Milwaukee’s Ascension St. Joseph hospital will go to a separate emergency department, according to an article on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel website.
The specialized ER is staffed by obstetrician-gynecologists and is the first of its kind the Milwaukee area.
The Ascension Wisconsin system is contracting with OB Hospitalist Group for seven OB/GYNs to staff the emergency department.
The OB ER also will provide care for women about to give birth before their physician arrives as well as deliver babies for women who don’t have an obstetrician.
Specialized ERs are not new. New York City’s Mount Sinai Medical Center Emergency Department is one of a growing number of ERs specializing in geriatric emergency medicine according to a Considerable article. These ERs include separate and customized physical spaces
The specialized collaborative team specifically designed to diagnose and treat people over 65 years old, so patients aren’t admitted for minor flu, for example.
