Canton-area police, area hospital security forces meet to share expectations of one another's role

Canton-area police and area hospital securit have collaborated to share expectations of one another’s role when prisoners are brought into area hospitals, according to an article on The Independent website.

“A lot of answers came out of that meeting as to what we expected and what they expected,” said Robert Everett, Mercy Medical Center’s security director.

While security officers cannot arrest someone, “they can detain people,” said Capt. Jack Angelo of the Canton Police Department. “They have a little more leeway than what police do,” he said.

Police officers are bound by federal and state search and seizure laws.

“Private security companies don’t have those major restrictions,” Angelo said. “Police have to have search warrants.”

Security officers don’t, especially when an incident happens on hospital property.
