The recent fire at Gokul Hospital, a private hospital in Mumbai, India, took the life of a doctor sleeping in a consulting room. The hospital had no fire alarm, according to an article on the FreePress Journal website. All 15 patients at the hospital were evacuated safely.
The fire originated on the first floor and spread upwards, gutting the second floor.
The article said the hospital had not taken standard safety precautions, such as having an open space around the building, approach roads for fire brigade and lacked of fire safety equipment.
Last year, civic hospitals were citing for violating fire safety standards ranging from storage of inflammable material in the basement, missing fire safety apparatus or having structural defects. Many major private hospitals like were also served notices for violations.
