Sharps and debris found in hospital laundry lead to staff safety concerns

Debris being found in 'clean' hospital linen across Canada's Saskatoon province

Sharp objects — such as needles, surgical instruments and syringes — are among the debris being found in “clean” hospital linen across Canada's Saskatoon province, according to an article on the Regina Leader Post website.

Between September 2015 and February 2016, most of the province’s health regions started transitioning to K-Bro Linen Systems Inc., because of infrastructure issues at many healthcare laundry facilities.

But with the move have come concerns over worker safety because of sharps making it into the laundry.

Staff have picked up clean scrubs and found tape stuck to them or random debris in the pockets. Other linens, such as bedspreads and sheets, have arrived with sharps or other debris in them.
