Effective auditing of cleaning and disinfection in healthcare facilities should be multiprofessional and use the expertise of nursing staff. 

Auditing tools should include visual inspection and process-evaluation tools such as fluorescent markers and ATP bioluminescence. 

Audit data should be used to improve performance through persuasive methodology, which has been shown to improve patient outcomes, the article said.
