Minimizing noise in the OR

Considering the physical environment and identifying ways to reduce distractions


Too much noise in the operating room can increase the risk for errors, according to an article on the Becker's Infection Control & Clinical Quality website. 

The Joint Commission recently published seven actions hospitals can take to address noise levels.

They include considering the physical environment and identifying ways to reduce noise, such as cutting down on the amount of times metal surgical tools are dropped on instrument trays.

The Joint Commission also suggested using alternative equipment that produces less noise whenever possible.
